SMX London - a quick roundup of an inaugural show
SMX London, organised by Chris Sherman and Danny Sullivan, was the first SMX show in the UK, and a part of a bigger worldwide tour. The sessions, as at any other similar conferences, were divided into tracks and obviously I missed some. I think this is done on purpose so I’ll have to go to the next one and try to see the sessions I missed
I was expecting a bigger turnout and an exhibition (there were no freebies), but I won’t complain. The food was great and the coffee strong.
OK, here are just few notes on what I have learned.
- Optimise images, not that many webmasters do that, although it depends on the sector you are in.
- Optimise for multimedia - the Universal Search is here!
- PPC is a constant struggle to make a better ad and landing page. Tip: if your Quality Score (or Quality Index) is low you may be better off if you scrap your campaign and build a new one.
- Don’t buy links, or rather don’t leave any footprint when you buy them.
- Some say you don’t have to buy links, and give plenty of ideas that are cool and work for some, but not for any sites. Although I liked the idea of spending £x,xxx from your SEO budget on online PR agency rather than on paid links.
- Getting to the top of SERPs is one thing, converting the traffic is another. Therefore pay attention to user intention, study behavioral patterns of your visitors, and stages in the buing cycle.
- Ask.com can be a nice addition to your keyword research toolbox.
- SEO in a nutshell: (1) Crawler visibility, (2) Relevancy, (3) Credibility
- 301 is your friend, but don’t chain them together, better 301 two (or more) old URLs directly to the new one.
- Enquiro Research has published an interesting white paper on Universal Search. Here you can get the Search Engine Results: 2010 paper on personalisation.
I have also learned that I have to go to Las Vegas (thank you Jon!).
